Marangu Village Tour

“When the past meets the present”

ABOUT THE ATTRACTION

The word “Marangu” came from the language of indigenous people of The Chagga ethnic group that means “a place with too many water streams”. You will notice this from myriad rural water pathways, countless rivers and waterfalls with evergreen environment. Marangu Village sits along the south-eastern slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro at the lower level of the montane rainforest about 5kms from the Kilimanjaro National Park. This densely populated village is the home of the Chagga people, although you will not observe that due to a dense vegetation cover. This village is beautiful with array of coffee farms, banana plantations and attractive waterfalls that provide a nice place to swim.

TOUR DETAILS:

Early in the morning after breakfast your guide will pick you from your hotel around 7:30am in Moshi (1hour drive)/Arusha (2.5hrs drive) and depart to Marangu Village. Upon arrival at the village you will start a tour by visiting the famous Kilimanjaro National Park gate (1870m) which is the headquarters of Kilimanjaro National Park and a two way route (ascending and descending) from the mountain. While you are at the gate you will learn all about the mountaineering climbing skills, history, flora and fauna. While exploring the area, you’ll also observe the preparations of mountain guides, porters and tourists on their way up.  When this is over you will walk towards the Marangu evergreen valley to see the surrounding lush environment with magnificent view of canopies and agricultural farming practices of Chagga coffee farms, vegetables and cereals. After this short walk Chagaa hot lunch awaits you. You will have your hot lunch in a local Chagga restaurant adjacent to the Marangu gate (please let us know any special food requirements i.e allergy) and testing popular local banana beer. After lunch you will drive for 15 minutes and have the opportunity to visit the Chagga caves that narrate the historic Tribal war between the Chagga and the Maasai 200 years ago and then head off to this picturesque Ndoro waterfall which you will spend the rest of the few hours before we drive back to Moshi or Arusha.
