7 Days Rongai Route

Rongai is the only one route over on the north eastern side of the mountain. This lesser known track may not be quite as spectacular as the western routes, but it does usually have far lower traffic than the other five night routes. This route retains a sense of un-spoilt wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north. Rongai Route is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro because of the long drive to the gate. The Rongai trail is thought to have the best chance of viewing wildlife. Rongai is the best route for people who are looking for a decent quality experience.

This tour starts near the Kenyan border and leads across the quieter, dryer northeast flank of the mountain. The partly barren landscape, the views into the African savannah and the rugged Mawenzi hold their own special appeal whilst at the Mawenzi Tarn Camp you will pass the only mountain lake on Kilimanjaro. Due to the drier climate, the route is also suitable for ascents during the rainy season. You descend on the Marangu route. Overnight in tents.

We recommend the Rongai route as a 7 day tour. For very fit mountain hikers, the 6 day tour is also suitable. The second day of the 6 day tour walks directly from the Simba Camp to the Kikelewa Camp, as the intermediate stage over the Second Cave Camp is omitted.

Day 1: Transfer from the hotel to Rongai Nalemoru Gate (1,800m/5,900ft) to Simba Camp (2,600m/8,400ft)

After an early breakfast in Moshi/Arusha and drive to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border on its east side to Nalemoru gate for registration and a general briefing for your upcoming ascent. After registration hike in a leisurely pace through cultivated fields and then into the pine rainforest and with some luck you will see the black and white colobus monkeys. After a 3-4-hour hike, you will arrive at the Simba Camp which is surrounded by a beautiful landscape and offers a view of the Kibo and where you will have your dinner and overnight stay.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 2: - Simba Camp (2,600m/8,400ft) - Second Cave Camp (3450m)

Today's section of the route leads through both heath and moorland landscapes and interesting heather-zone flowers and plants that grow alongside the trail. In good weather you have a great view of the savannah and Mawenzi will be in a plain view; a stunning sight. Dinner and overnight stay at the second cave Camp. After lunch, you can take a short hike towards the Third Cave - this supports your acclimatization.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 3 Second Cave Camp (3450m) – Kikelewa Cave Camp (3600m)

This day is an acclimatization day, allowing you to hike in the beginning of the day hiking upwards through heath and moorland to Kikelewa cave camp and rest in the afternoon and evening.  The hike is relatively short but steep through the moorland and towards Mawenzi’s steeply rising slopes (Mawenzi peak). The trekking time is about 3 – 5 hours, arriving in camp for a hot lunch, and a chance to acclimatize while exploring the surrounding landscape of bizarre plants and rock formations and caves. Dinner and overnight at Kikelelwa caves camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 4 Kikelewa Camp (3650m) - Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4310m)

Trek from the moorland with senecios typical for the Kilimanjaro are your companion and eventually into the stark highland desert towards Mawenzi, the way leads over a moraine ridge to today‘s destination - the Mawenzi Tarn Hut, on trails not frequented by many tourists. From the Tarn hut Campsite you will enjoy a magnificent view across the saddle towards Kibo, your final target. Total trekking time is 5-7 hours. Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp is located at the only mountain lake on Kilimanjaro. It is one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 5 Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4310m) - Kibo Hut (4700m)

After breakfast the trail leads steady uphill. Once you have reached the mountain ridge, you will have a clear view of the Kibo saddle. The trail continues crossing the massive saddle which connects the Mawenzi to the main summit Kibo. The crossing is impressive and the landscape spectacularly stark. Prepare all your gear for the night ahead, and arrive in early to rest. Here the landscape changes into an alpine desert, only a few plants can survive in the dry and low oxygen environment. The Kibo Hut is located at the foot of the main peak of the same name, and it is here that you will spend the last night before the ascent to the summit. Tonight is for gathering your strength and sleeping early, as the night will be short and tomorrow will be exhausting. The trekking time today is 5 - 7 hours.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 6: Summit Day - Kibo Hut (4700m) - Uhuru Peak (5895m) - Horombo Hut (3700m)

You are awoken at midnight to accomplish your final ascent, and depart the camp at about 1am after warming up with a cup of tea or coffee. Using the light of your headlamp, the trail leads upwards passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the first milestone to the summit, then the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. Hiking will be long and strenuous the temperatures will be between -0 to -10° C and just before sunrise (4am to 6am), you can expect temperatures from -10° to -20° C. Just before sunrise you will reach Gilman's Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land and soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak (5895m). Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Kibo Hut. After 3 hours of descending to Kibo Hut, there is a pause for rest & food, then another 3 to 4 hours to reach Horombo Hut.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 7 Horombo Hut (3700m) - Marangu Gate (1860m) - Transfer to the hotel

At Mandara Hut (2700m), you will enjoy lunch with views of the rainforest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Here it will be time to say goodbye to your mountain team.
